Early Life and Career

Petit was born in Nemours, France, on March 13, 1949. He developed an early interest in acrobatics and circus arts, and he began practicing tightrope walking at the age of six. By the time he was a teenager, Petit was performing in circuses and carnivals throughout Europe.

In 1971, Petit moved to New York City, where he began to develop plans for his walk between the Twin Towers. The Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world at the time, and Petit's plan was to walk between them on a high wire strung 110 stories above the ground.

The Walk

On August 7, 1974, Petit and a team of accomplices snuck into the World Trade Center and set up a high wire between the two towers. Petit then walked the wire eight times, spending a total of 45 minutes in the air.
